What Inputs Are Needed for a Precision Equipment Vibration Review?

2026/09/22

A useful vibration-protection review starts with the equipment's transport configuration, known sensitivities, distribution conditions and acceptance criteria. Weight is one input; it is not a formula for selecting cushioning thickness or proving protection.

ISTA's design guidance emphasizes matching distribution hazards to product vulnerabilities and understanding how a shipment is handled, transported and stored when selecting a test. ISTA: Getting Started with Design & Testing.

The checklist below is an editorial framework for preparing an engineering discussion. It is not an ISTA procedure or a prescription for a particular instrument.

1. Describe the equipment as it will travel

Identify the model, configuration and accessories included in the shipment. Record equipment dimensions and mass separately from the proposed package dimensions and total packed mass. Include available drawings showing the center of gravity, permitted support areas and restricted contact areas.

Document any manufacturer-specified transport locks, removable components and required orientation. Keep each instruction linked to its applicable configuration. A photograph can help explain the arrangement, but it does not establish allowable loads or a vibration limit.

2. Separate known sensitivity from assumptions

Use the following questions to organize the information supplied by the equipment manufacturer or responsible engineer:

Review input Information to request
Critical functions Which measurements, alignments or operating functions must remain within specification?
Vibration sensitivity Are there documented sensitive directions, frequency ranges or allowable response levels, and under what conditions were they established?
Shock sensitivity Is there a separately documented shock limit or fragility assessment? What configuration and measurement conditions apply?
Existing evidence Are there relevant test reports, arrival inspections or failure records for the same configuration?
Information gaps Which limits are unknown, who can confirm them, and which design decisions depend on them?

For this preliminary review, record shock and vibration evidence separately; do not assume that a documented shock limit establishes an allowable vibration response. Record the type of evidence, its units, conditions and scope. If a failure has been reported, describe the observed symptom separately from the suspected cause. An out-of-tolerance reading after arrival does not, by itself, identify vibration as the cause.

3. Describe the distribution environment

Prepare a route description covering transport modes, transfers, handling, storage, shipment orientation and whether the equipment travels as an individual package or part of a larger load. Add expected temperature and humidity conditions where known.

If route measurements are available, retain their source, sensor location, axes, recording conditions and the shipment configuration. Distinguish measurements from assumptions or a proposed laboratory profile. Where data are missing, record the gap; a generic profile should not be labelled as a measurement of the customer's route.

4. Agree on what verification must establish

Propose acceptance criteria for review before testing. For precision equipment, the discussion may include functional performance, alignment or calibration checks as well as physical condition. The equipment owner must define applicable limits and the method of assessment; an undamaged outer package alone does not establish instrument performance.

ISTA distinguishes non-simulation integrity tests, partial simulations and general simulations. Its partial-simulation category is not intended to predict shipping performance. These categories serve different purposes; selecting one requires more than knowing the package mass. ISTA: Test Procedures.

Record the selected procedure and edition, applicability, sample configuration, conditioning, test sequence and acceptance criteria in the project plan. This article does not select a procedure, prescribe vibration levels or report a completed test. A reference to ISTA is not evidence that this equipment or packaging has been certified.

FAQ

Is equipment weight enough to select vibration protection?

No. The proposed review also needs sensitivity, support conditions, shipment configuration and distribution information. Weight alone cannot determine a defensible material thickness. This recommendation applies ISTA's broader principle of considering both the product and its distribution environment. ISTA design guidance.

What if the equipment's fragility or vibration limits are unknown?

Record them as unknown and request relevant manufacturer data. If unavailable, have the responsible engineers agree how the missing information will be established before making performance claims. Do not substitute an assumed fragility value or promise a protection level. This is a proposed review response to an evidence gap, not an ISTA-prescribed fragility test. Background: ISTA design guidance.

What should determine the verification method?

Use the shipment type, the decision the test must support and the equipment's acceptance criteria. Review the applicable current procedure with the responsible engineer and test laboratory. A screening result should not be presented as proof of every transport condition or as certification of the product. ISTA test categories.

Share your transport conditions and observed issues

For an initial packaging review, share the equipment type, dimensions and mass, transport modes and destination, available sensitivity information, and any observed transport-related symptoms with PackCube. Identify unknown items rather than estimating them; exclude confidential drawings or customer details from public submissions.
